Before arriving at UMBC, Coach Stelma served as Head Coach at Oakland University in Michigan. In just two seasons, he led the Golden Grizzlies to significant improvement, including a 25-24 overall record and a competitive Horizon League performance. He earned a notable victory over Big Ten opponent Michigan State and coached multiple All-Conference players, including NFCA All- Region honoree Maggie Murphy.
Prior to Oakland, Coach Stelma spent eight seasons as Head Coach at Saint Peter’s University. There, he transformed a struggling program into a consistent winner. He was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year in 2022 after improving the Peacocks by 20 wins in a single season. Under his leadership, Saint Peter’s achieved back-to-back 20-win seasons and recorded their first 30-win campaign since 2002. In a three-year span, his teams won 68 games, the most successful stretch in program history in over two decades.
